Wandering Abroad, a film by Corinne Silva, focuses on David Oluwale,
whose body was pulled out of the River Aire in 1969.
Oluwale travelled to England from Nigeria in 1949 with dreams of
being an engineer. Arriving in Hull, he was sentenced as a stowaway
to a term in Armley Gaol, Leeds. Twenty years later he was found
drowned in the Aire, having being hounded by local police.
The film traces Oluwale's final journey down the river, but also
narrates a journey through the city, a journey through time,
resonant with the change wrought by contemporary urban
development.
The screening of Wandering Abroad will be followed by a
talk with Corinne Silva and Nigel Walsh (curator at Leeds
Art Gallery).
Film installation commissioned by Leeds Art Gallery, supported by
Arts Council England.
